The Making of Danielle's Kitchen

For those of you who don't know, Danielle is an amazing cook!! We both really enjoy cooking, so it was clear to us that this room was going to be the most important one in the house. So how do you create the perfect kitchen? It is actually much tougher than it sounds and when you look at a blank piece of paper your mind goes blank for an instant! We approached it by listing all the appliances, fixtures and fittings we wanted then worked out how to make them fit in the space provided. It was glaringly evident from day one that the existing kitchen was nowhere near big enough. So what do you do? amend your list of units? nope you knock down the adjoining wall to give more space!

With the wall down the new space was amazing. The windows in the dining room and the kitchen are over 2m wide and  1.8m tall so with light flooding in from both sides it has made the perfect room for us, an open plan kitchen/dining room.

We have gone with a Godin wood burning stove and a Falcon Range for under  the hood. During my last trip home we drove to Montlucon and bought the kitchen units (which at this time are still boxed up and in the garage).  Once M. Kosubay, the stone mason has completed the floor then all the appliances can be fitted. Here are a few CAD drawings I have done of what it should look like (and no its not going to be grassed!)

So how do you make a fantastic kitchen even better? The kitchen and dining room run the full width of the house so its quite a large space. We have decided to fit a bi-fold door instead of a new kitchen window which will open out onto a deck. If you remember during the first blog, the living floor as it were is actually on the first floor. So our plans to build a deck have been accelerated somewhat. This means that the space with the doors open will be from the Dining room window all the way out onto the deck

Now I know Danielle would want you all to know that the colours shown in the CAD Drawing were not of her choosing! but you get the idea.

The ceiling is now complete, the walls are ready for painting, its all wired and plumbed, the old kitchen door has been blocked off and we eagerly await the floor tiles going down then it can be outfitted. Exciting times!
